The 47th Hong Kong Arts Festival – Oper Leipzig: Wagner’s Tannhäuser

1-2/3/2019

The Hong Kong Children’s Choir was invited by the Hong Kong Arts Festival to perform in Tannhäuser on 1 and 2 March at the Grand Theatre of Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Inspired by medieval legends, the opera Tannhäuser brought by the German art group Oper Leipzig was presented with a brand new contemporary interpretation. It was the Hong Kong premiere of this fully-staged operatic masterpiece by Maestro Wagner this time.

The story depicts protagonist Tannhäuser’s struggle with inner nature and between flesh and spirit in the secular world. Multiple selected HKCC members made their entrance in Act II, explaining to the protagonist the nature of love in a singing competition. The whole opera was sung in German. Members had an amply rewarding experience performing on stage together with over 150 musicians and singers mainly from the Gewandhausorchester and Chor der Oper Leipzig.
